Who we are

The Chewing Gum Action Group (CGAG) was set up in 2003 to deliver a long-term solution to irresponsible chewing gum disposal.

CGAG is chaired by Defra and brings together representatives from the charity Keep Britain Tidy, Local Government Association, Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, the chewing gum industry, the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), the Welsh Assembly Government and The Scottish Government, Keep Wales Tidy and Zero Waste Scotland.

By coming together in this way, we combine expertise and resources to tackle the problem of gum litter in the most sustainable way – by changing behaviour.

Our campaigns are proven to work. They educate, motivate and inform people about the need to dispose of gum properly – and the penalties if they don’t.

How do we work with local authorities and other land managers?

We deliver everything authorities and other land managers need to plan, launch, implement and monitor campaigns in your community. We do ask for some co-ordination for media events to really get the message out, but there’s no cost.

We provide paid-for advertising to participating organisation, with tested advertising and messages that really work.

We book advertising in your area, on your behalf.

We work with local authorities and other land managers to develop campaigns initiatives that achieve maximum impact.

And we measure our success, to help sustain lasting change.
